Piet and Pita Buitendijk are the founders of Noah's Ark and the 'papa and mama' of more than 150 children. The couple has been working as missionaries in Uganda since 1996 and established Noah's Ark in 2000. Since 2006, Mukono has been the home of Noah's Ark and of Piet and Pita.
Before moving to Uganda, Piet and Pita had already worked in several African countries, with Piet working as a PR officer for development organizations among other roles. They felt an increasingly strong calling to go to Uganda. When the couple took the step to move to Uganda in 1996, they looked for an organization to join. In 1999, they decided to start their own organization: Noah's Ark.
Piet and Pita are not employed by Noah's Ark and therefore do not receive a salary. However, they are in service to the children, for whom they are available day and night. The love and gratitude they receive from the children is worth much more than any salary. Piet and Pita hold fast to a verse from Matthew:
"Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." Matthew 18:5 (Revised State Translation)
